The Perspective Behind LUCEN

THE ORIGIN

The Conversation That Changed My Perspective

Throughout my career, I had the privilege of working with advisors, consultants, providers, executives, and clients across a wide range of organizations and business models.

Like many leaders, I participated in strategic planning sessions, business reviews, advisory councils, and growth initiatives designed to strengthen partnerships and improve outcomes.

Then I had the opportunity to lead a pilot focused on gathering deeper partner insight.

I expected to validate what we already knew. Instead, I learned something far more valuable.

The conversations uncovered perspectives, priorities, and opportunities that rarely surfaced through traditional meetings or business reviews. Some of the most impactful ideas required little or no budget. Others challenged assumptions we didn't realize we were making.

When the pilot concluded, I wasn't struck by how much we learned about our partners. I was struck by how much we learned about ourselves.

That experience changed my perspective and ultimately became the foundation for Know Your Channel™ (KYC).

THE THREAD

Everything I've Built Leads Back to Understanding

That lesson runs through everything I've created at LUCEN. KYC, L.E.N.S., the Actionable Partner Plan (APP), and my AI work may look different on the surface, but they share a common purpose: helping organizations gain deeper insight so they can make better decisions, strengthen partnerships, and create solutions that matter.

I've come to believe that sustainable growth rarely begins with more information. It begins with better understanding.

When people feel heard, valued, and invested in the outcome, momentum follows.

THE LENS

Throughout my career, I learned that even the most experienced organizations often see only part of the picture. The lens represents a commitment to looking deeper, asking better questions, and bringing important perspectives into focus. The word Lucen itself reflects that belief — illumination, clarity, insight. Bringing what matters into focus.

THE MINDSET

A Different Kind of Curiosity

My approach has always started with questions rather than answers. Instead of asking what I knew, I became more interested in discovering what I might be missing.

Many of the most valuable insights I've encountered came from people whose perspectives had not yet been fully explored. I genuinely believe those closest to a challenge often hold the insight needed to solve it.

"I'm not interested in having all the answers. I'm interested in creating conversations that reveal better ones."

When I Hear No

Over the years, I've learned that no isn't always the end of a conversation. Sometimes it's an invitation to understand something I haven't yet discovered. So when I hear no, I ask three questions: Is this a boundary to respect? A decision missing information? Or an assumption worth questioning?

After a sixteen-month recordkeeping search, I learned we had lost. The decision didn't make sense, so I asked why. The CFO, who hadn't been part of the search, made the final call based on cost. I asked for one meeting, and the next morning I was on a plane. Not to argue. To listen. Once I understood what success looked like through his eyes, we found a solution that honored both cost and participant outcomes. Weeks later, the no became a yes.

The goal was never to change his mind. The goal was to understand it.

I've watched no turn into yes again and again in my life and career. Not because I pushed harder, but because I looked closer. Some nos hold up. Some don't. I help people find out which.

Why the Aperture

LUCEN Perspectives logo

Look closely at the C in LUCEN. It's a camera aperture, the part of a lens that opens to let in light and bring the picture into focus. That's the work I do. Too many growth strategies are built on assumptions about advisors and consultants, and assumptions blur the picture. When you change your perspective and sharpen your focus, what was hidden becomes clear. Focus reveals what assumptions conceal.

What LUCEN Is Really About

LUCEN exists to help organizations gain clarity, strengthen partnerships, and uncover opportunities that might otherwise remain hidden.

I believe people deserve to be heard, understood, and included — before decisions are made on their behalf.
